Fourth Scary Thing: Public Speaking

I could not convince myself to stand in front of a group of talented strangers, and lay out my meager offering for dissection. So I didn’t. I always regretted that. Continue reading

Easter-Only Churchgoers Want More

Today, Easter Sunday, churches across the world are filled to overflowing with people who do not usually go to church–people who have been hurt by Christians or who are not sure they really believe all this Bible stuff; people who hope to see a kind face and hear a merciful word. In spite of their doubt and fear, they feel compelled to attend a church on Easter to hear about the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Continue reading

The Worst Sinner in the World

I’ll call her Grace. That’s not her real name, but she’s a real woman. Looking down, wiping tears, with her voice barely above a whisper, she told me, “I haven’t gone to church in a long time. I believe. . . but I don’t pray anymore, not since. . . well, I just feel. . . not worthy.” Continue reading

What is Your New Year’s Resolution?

This is the year, God willing, that I overcome my fears and become a stronger person for it. Either that, or my fears will prove totally founded and I’ll perish with the brave dying words, “I told you so”. Continue reading

Hold On, Chicken Little. The Sky is Not Falling.

Did you vote today? We Americans live in such a unique time and place in the world, in that we have some say in the laws and people running our government. Historically, this has not been true—and still is not true—for most of the world. This great responsibility and blessing scares us. Because we have some control, but not all, we get frantic. We desperately try to persuade others to see what we see, and when they don’t, we take it personally. How could they be so blind? Continue reading

Yom Kippur and a New Covenant

Yom Kippur, the Biblical Day of Atonement, begins at sunset tonight. It is the most somber night of the year for Jews–a day of rest, prayers, fasting and repentance. The observance began as a direct command from the LORD: Continue reading

I am for My Beloved and My Beloved is for Me

“I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me.” (Song of Solomon 6:3) In Hebrew, it’s ah-nee le-doh-dee, ve-doh-dee lee. The Hebrew month of Elul (אֱלוּל), which we are now in, is an acronym for this verse, and serves as a time of preparation for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Twenty-seven years ago, I prepared to marry my beshert, my destiny. Friends gathered around and fussed over my gown, . . . Continue reading

Do Christians Follow Political Peer-Pressure?

My daddy taught me that polite people don’t talk politics or religion. By that measure, I’m not very polite. I blame peer pressure. Everyone’s doing it these days. My last blog—my take on the Republicans in Tampa—apparently caused reader confusion. . . Continue reading
